اگر احتمال می‌دهیم، اتفاق خاصی افتاده است، می‌توانیم از فعل کمکی should برای بیان احتمال رخ دادن آن اتفاق کمک بگیریم:

اما گاهی می‌خواهیم به این اشاره کنیم که احتمالاً طرف مقابل، از ماجرا خبر دارد:
You should have seen this house before I fixed it.
عبارت ‘should have’ + ‘-ed’ برای اشاره به این موضوع در چنین مواردی کاربرد دارد:
You should have heard the noise.
You should have seen my face, I was so happy.
البته می‌دانیم برای بعضی از افعال (مانند see و give)، این قاعده اضافه کردن پسوند برای ساختن شکل سوم فعل (particle)، صدق نمی‌کند.
I should have given you to Selah.
She should have gone to prison, but… rich girls don’t go to jail.
کاربرد دیگر ‘should have’ + ‘-ed’ برای اشاره به پیشمانی در مورد چیزی ناخوشایند در گذشته است:

“کاش”هایی که داریم را با چنین جملاتی می‌توانیم بگوییم.

گاهی این “کاش” گفتن، نوعی ابراز ادب است برای هدیه‌ای که گرفته شده یا زحمتی که انجام شده:
