قبلاً if را در قواعد گرامری متعددی دیدهایم. یکی از کاربردهای دیگر if برای صحبت در مورد یک وضعیت فرضی و خیالی است:
“It would be better if you spent some time in the fresh air with your friends or walking in a park.”
“If you wanted to do some outdoor activities, we could go fishing or even walking through the green fields.”
در آهنگی که در فیلم Fiddler on the Roof توسط Tevye خوانده میشود چنین ساختاری را میتوانیم بشنویم:

“…If I were a… rich… man; I’d build a big, tall house with rooms by the dozen; Right in the middle of the town; A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below; There would be one long staircase just going up; And one even longer coming down; And one more leading nowhere, just for show…”

چنین ساختاری را در زبان فارسی هم به همین شیوه استفاده میکنیم.

→ It would be better if Wall Street brokers spent their energy solving engineering problems instead of creating economic crashes.
If financiers were school teachers:
→ It would be better if financiers spent some time teaching children simple math rather than creating leveraged derivatives.
If firemen, rocket scientists, and teachers got million-dollar bonuses:
→ It would be better if firemen, rocket scientists, and teachers were rewarded for their essential contributions instead of bankers
