احتمالاً می‌دانید که کلماتی مانند people یا crew که به یک گروه اشاره می‌کنند را اسم جمع یا collective noun می‌گوییم. مانند crew در دو ویدئوی زیر که جز کلمات ترم سوم ما هم است:

The crew were mostly just kids

Apocalypse Now (1979)

If the crew was killed, he was capable of carrying out the mission on his own.

۲۰۱۰: The Year We Make Contact (1984)

دقت کردید که یک بار was استفاده شده و یک بار were ؟ کدام درست است؟ آیا اسامی جمع (مانند crew) مفرد به حساب می‌آیند یا جمع؟

در جملات زیر، به اسم جمع دیگری که در این ترم یاد می‌گیریم توجه کنید: cattle

Come up with something… Cattle are prey animals.

چرا گاهی cattle جمع فرض می‌شود و گاهی مفرد؟

احتمالاً جواب آن را حدس می‌زنید: بستگی به منظور گوینده دارد. اگر او cattle را تعدادی گاو و گوسفند ببیند، آن را جمع دانسته است. اما اگر cattle را یک گله بداند، مفرد به حساب می‌آید.

در جمله The crew were mostly just kids توجه گوینده به تک تک کودکانی است که جز خدمه کشتی هستند. پس were استفاده کرده است.

اما در جمله the crew was killed، صحبت در مورد گروه خدمه ست؛ انگار که یک گروه است با هویت مستقل از افراد آن.

در جملات زیر، می‌توانید استدلال کنید که چرا اسم جمع جمله، جمع یا فرد در نظر گرفته شده است؟

    در جمله
    The whole staff is gone.
    چون اشاره به این داره که تمام کارکنان رفته آمد یعنی کل بنابراین
    staff is اومده
    در جمله بعد منظورش اینه که مجموعه شرکت ما با این سرمایه گذاری راحت نیست
    بنابراین company is اومده

    در جمله بعد منظورش اینه که تک تک کارکنان ساعت ۷.۱۵ سر کار هستند
    بنابراین whole staff have آورده

    در جمله بعد گفته تمام یا کل کارکنان با هم دوست و مهربان هستند
    staff is آورده

    در جمله بعد گفته مجموعه شرکت ما علاقه مند که به شرکت شما خدمات بده
    Company is
    در جمله بعد منظور از company,
    او یا ضمیر مفرد هست. برای همین با فعل has اومده.

    در جمله آخر منظور تک تک افراد خدمه هست یعنی هر عضو از کل مجموعه

    من نمیدونستم این کلمه اسم جمع هست : investment
    دو مثال :
    مفرد: Any investment involves an element of risk.
    جمع: These investment arrangements could be Trojan horses for anti-competitive monopolies.

      خب ظاهرا من یه مقدار عجله و اشتباه کردم. جمله دوم جمع بودنش به خاطر کلمه

      هست.
      و یه مثال نقض هم در دیکشنری کمبریج پیدا کردم که کلمه

      حالا سوالم اینه آیا این کلمه اسم جمع هست یا نه؟
